Malta’s history is fragmented – due in part to turbulent episodes of occupation and oppression as a result of foreign military and economic interests. Magna Żmien is a community project that aims to place tacit local knowledge, community memories, and micronarratives on par with grand narratives of hegemonic representation in Malta. Inspired by Sonia Andrade's video Untitled [Beans] from 1975, the artists question their own role, identity and position in contemporary Malta, the island they both immigrated to a while ago. It is now clearer, however, that in the late 18th century, a legal form of pirate known as the ‘corsair’ emerged - the Maltese pirate regulated and funded by the Knights of St. John to do precisely the same things as its Ottoman counterpart, capturing slaves and instigating fear on the sea and shorelines. Limestone buildings, whose walls held a thousand tales, have been torn down and replaced by concrete blocks and high-rises. We now have so many new spaces, but so few places. He uses these media to activate the queer perspective in a patriarchal-colonialist context nurtured by the dominance of audiovisual persuasion and the normative representation of memory. Ortiz Herrera studied Fine Arts at the University of Barcelona, and filmmaking at The New School University in New York, and currently teaches documentary film at University College Utrecht. Through her practice, she has explored ideas related to identity, gender, language, education and illness, beginning from her personal experience and working towards their use in generating thought. Among other projects, in 2019 she presented Semillas para la resistance at Tigomigo, which took as a starting point the conversations that Pérez has with her daughter, specifically those related to history, gender discrimination, ecology and politics. This premise, together with the practice of conscious, non-adultcentric and feminist parenting, has allowed the artist to continue working with the idea of her previous project, New Universe: discovering new possibilities, presented in 2016 at the Centro de Documentación y Museo Textil de Terrassa (Barcelona) and that took free education as the starting point for an engine of change. These plants embody the resilience and perseverance of the Maltese people over the centuries. However, we must not forget that these transformations the island has undergone, and all the struggles faced, have shaped and continue to shape the identity of the Maltese people. We cannot undervalue ancestral knowledge in favor of controlling nature through instrumentalisation and manipulation. How individuals create and modify their surroundings is evaluated in relation to the elements that have made up the region. The different types of fossils that are abundant in the area provide evidence of the changing environment, and the idea of sediment itself serves as an example of how the cosmos alternates between decomposition and recomposition on a continual basis. The wind and waves sculpted the naturally occurring rock formation known as the Azure Window, and now those same forces have claimed it. One can already see new windows forming around the Dwejra area, and so the cycle repeats itself. Posidonia is often perceived by residents as unsanitary and bothersome, though this perception stands to shift when one learns of its invaluable role in Mediterranean ecosystems, including those of Dwejra. Posidonia has been protecting the coast for thousands of years before the occupation of this land for military purposes. The island of Gozo is home to the second oldest known structure in the world, the Ġgantija temple, built 5800 years ago. Considering the proper motions of stars, the sky - including the constellations - looked very different back then compared to today. This awareness makes observations even more fascinating, revealing how dynamic and ever-changing our universe is over the centuries. Luke has presented his works in prestigious festivals globally, including the Dance Festival Malta 2023 and venues in Zurich, Switzerland, to transcend traditional boundaries. Luke's choreography, "mar," will have its premiere in November as part of the Three Palace Festival in 2024. Luke also collaborated with movingeedit studio on an exhibition titled "Fluidity Of Being" at Spazju Kreattiv. His art goes beyond aesthetics to touch audiences emotionally, while continuing to inspire people and raise awareness about global issues. He explores the world of writing combined with photography. Lia produced interactive installation works for Notte Bianca, the Malta International Arts Festival and the Ritmu Roots Festival. As a spoken word artist, he produced work for the APS Summer Festival accompanied by the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra. He worked as a researcher on Teatru Malta's production, paying tribute to Prof. Oliver Friggieri's' O.' In June 2024, he released his first self-published book - POĠĠI –a collection of writings from the lockdown period. Anecdotes collected from the streets, telephone notes, and poetry juxtaposed with photographs make up Lia's publication. She has participated in many various collaborative art projects, art festivals, and exhibitions. Her artworks are often based on personal journeys, using mixed media, visual narrative, multi-sensory art, colour, and space. Photography is essential to her artistic practice in documenting and researching. Throughout the past few years, she has explored multi-sensory art (light and sound installations). ‘Xlokk Kaħlani’ (2021) was her first solo exhibition. It was an intensive documentary research project highlighting her life in Birżebbuġa. The "camera", used as the main artistic tool, enabled her to develop experimental works blending photography, light and sound installation, and the objective of the project was to provide the audience with a multisensory experience. Throughout her artistic development, she continues exploring new techniques and working outside her comfort zone to improve her knowledge and skills. We long to learn how to listen, and to direct our attention to what is heard, alongside our community. opensound.network emerged from a series of sound performance-installations in open spaces, centered around collective listening experiences. Born out of a research-based process, the location and its ecology – acoustic and otherwise – are brought to the center. She is concerned with the language and craft of painting. Her practice is based on an interrogation of what constitutes a painting; questioning and identifying the basic principles that govern its structure and behaviour. Her work constantly aims to evaluate its own constituency, questioning its origins and how that immediately is part of the response to the work. During this process, she is directly involved with the history of painting, expanding upon its meaning and purpose, contextualising it within contemporaneity. Sims holds an MFA in Digital Art by Research from the University of Malta and a BFA in Fine Art from Falmouth University, UK. Zammit holds a degree in Geography (Melit) and an MSc in Countryside Conservation and Management (UWE). She is reading for a MA in Social Practice Art and Critical Education with the University of Malta. Her creative practice combines social practice art and socio-environmental contexts. She uses ceramics and other media as a means to develop conversations and deep connections. Since an early age she has been involved in ceramics through her father, the late ceramic artist Gabriel Caruana (1929 - 2018), learning from an early age how to handle clay, the processes of ceramic art making, and how to manage a ceramic arts studio. Since 2014 Raffaella has participated in ceramic courses and seminars and practised in different ceramic studios. In 2016 she co-founded the Gabriel Caruana Foundation, serving as Executive Director and as Co-Creative Director and Programme Manager. Zammit has developed several artistic projects that involve different communities and was awarded a number of funded projects including Kreaturi, Nimxu Mixja, ħożż il-ħsejjes, Whereabouts are you from?, SPRING 2022 - 2024, Fresh Fabrik, SKOPRI to name a few. Influenced by his proximity to ancient sites like Ġgantija Temples, Agius draws inspiration from the island’s rich cultural landscape, often documenting rituals and sourcing materials from construction excavations. He uses the local environment as his primary medium to explore universal existential themes, particularly humanity's deep-rooted connection with the earth for spiritual, ritualistic, and everyday purposes. His approach is akin to that of an archaeologist, focusing on formless matter and the primal essence of his materials. Agius's artistic journey began in his father's sculpture studio and was further shaped through mentorship with Harry Alden. He studied at the University of Malta and pursued further education in Italy and at Central St Martins in London, and was engaged as a visiting lecturer at the University of Malta for a number of years. Agius has exhibited his works locally at prominent venues and internationally in galleries across Europe, such as the European Ceramics Context Ceramic Biennale in Denmark, Premio Faenza in Italy, and Galleria Eduardo Secci in Florence. He has participated in a substantial number of solo and group exhibitions in Malta and Europe since 2009, and his works can be found in both public and private collections in Europe and USA. Between 2013 and 2015, Falzon coordinated The Xarolla Windmill Project. In 2014, Falzon was selected for the global Absolut Vodka Transform Today project. His body of work from 2016 to 2019 has become a point of reference in contemporary Maltese political and socially engaged art. Falzon’s first novel, SAJF, was described as the voice of the Maltese millennial generation. SAJF was shortlisted for National Book Council 2023 National Book awards. His practice is an assemblage of designing objects, interventions and narratives that question the social, political and cultural territories of spaces; speculating on obscured realities hidden within the mundane fabric of everyday life. He weaves through his background in visual art, speculative design, performance, engineering and circus. In 2021, she graduated with a BFA (Honours) from the Digital Arts Department of the University of Malta. Sasha is interested in projects that largely investigate the human impact on the environment, as well as playing with the interconnectivity between nature and humans. She seeks out changing landscapes, indirectly prioritising the desolate, and generally builds her visual narrative by shooting with expired 35mm film, inviting an element of chance and an act of surrender in her process of image-making. Though her work is deeply personal, it is open to myriad interpretations and speaks to many different audiences. Despite the layered messages and intricate methods, Afsoon’s art is not convoluted, as viewers easily and often engage with her humour, playfulness and sophistication. She received a Horizons grant for her project Life May End as part of the Arab Documentary Photography 2023 Program in its eighth session. Born and raised near Thessaloniki, Greece she spent her academic life in Xanthi, where she studied Architectural Engineering at Democritus University of Thrace. In 2018 she relocated to Malta to pursue her architectural practice, while simultaneously shifting her creative focus to ceramics. Under the mentorship of Rosella Schembri during the past five years, Ioulia debuted her solo exhibition What’s Bugging You? She has also contributed to collective exhibitions, including MARA 2 at Bureau Iniala (produced by Marie Gallery 5 in collaboration with Il-Lokal) and Clay/Craft/Concept at the Malta Society of Arts, curated by Gabriel Zammit. Ioulia’s work, which has now fully transitioned from architecture to ceramics, investigates form, material and texture. Inspired by nature, she creates a whimsical ‘monster world’ that oscillates between realism and surrealism. Her pieces merge functional design with dreamy elements, employing scenographic storytelling to critique modern society. Originally from Libya, she founded Noon Arts Projects in 2012 as a small private arts foundation, with a mission to bring the best of contemporary art and emerging talent from the SWANA region and to expose it to the world stage. Collaborating with cultural foundations and galleries worldwide, Najlaa has curated and produced over 26 projects in the UK, Spain, Italy, Libya and Malta. Major milestones involved: Imago Mundi (a project in collaboration with the Benetton Foundation in 2016), Pop Art from North Africa and Retracing A Disappearing Landscape (both travelling exhibitions shown in London, Madrid and Cordoba, between 2017 and 2020), Soul Taming (a solo show for Nubian Egyptian artist Fathi Hassan in 2021), The Alternative Museum of the Sudan (for Sudanese artist Amado Alfadni in 2022), Totalitarian Props (co-curating and producing a collective exhibition and engagement programme in partnership with Shubbak Festival and The Africa Centre in London 2023) and most recently, Nedim Draws Writing (a solo for the Iraqi/Dutch artist Nedim Kufi 2024 in London). Maria's work has been showcased internationally, with notable exhibitions in Beirut, Paris, Washington DC, Copenhagen, Brussels, Palermo and Berlin. Maria's creative practice delves into the intersection of political, social, and natural landscapes, inviting viewers to reflect on their role within evolving ecosystems. Through photography, image manipulation and video, she illustrates the interconnectedness between man-made and the natural environment. More recently, she has been experimenting with painting and drawing on diverse materials and textiles; encouraging thought of personal agency within broader societal issues. Her approach also deconstructs identities by removing subjects and objects from their original contexts. She describes her work as a form of resistance against political and social challenges, narrating transformations within imagined spaces. In 2024, Sam was invited to present her debut solo show in Chongqing, China at Dimensions Art Centre, and also participated in the inaugural Malta Biennale. She is a member of the PONKS art collective that makes posters, videos and installations. PONKS presented the show RITUAL during the JAOU Tunis: Contemporary Art Biennale in 2024. Her artist name is not insignificant, based on the middle name given to her by her paternal grandfather for his love of the Golden Age of Arabic music; and, in particular, the poetic songs of the Syrian singer Asmahan. Growing up among plural cultures and influences, she came to question and explore her place in the world. During childhood, her keen interest in art also developed as she connected with a local artist for seven years. After this, she went to Paris for formal studies in art and design, followed by work with high-end Parisian design agencies, whose clients introduced her to North African, Middle Eastern and Western craftsmanship. This is when she rediscovered an affection for her mixed French, Moroccan, Amazigh, Arab and Muslim heritage. She writes autofiction, and her publications include Washing up in Malta (2012), Songs for a Blind Date (2013), Middle Sea Dreaming: Short Stories on a long journey: Series 1, Pharaohs and Saints (2024). Series 2, Mothers and Martyrs is currently in print with Midsea Books. Jo has lived and worked in England as a teacher and leisure centre manager; in the Bahamas as a teacher; in Australia as an Academic, an Independent Fisher, a Recreation Officer and a Community Arts Officer; in Malta as a teacher of English as a Second Language, a Citizen Journalist and Arts worker. Her PhD from Griffith University in Brisbane, Australia, used action research processes to explore how older Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal women constructed their lives through engagement with Community Theatre. Josephine has reached an age where she has lived 81% of her life, generously assuming 100 years as the full extent. Her archive of that life is rich with found objects and fragile memories that only she can access unless she tells stories that draw on it. Like all humans, she may, therefore, locate herself in the powerful position of curator of her archive, selector of objects for display and teller of stories about them. She was also selected by Katy Hessel for The Great Women Artists Residency X Palazzo Monti in Brescia, Italy, and held a solo exhibition at Sim Smith Gallery in London. Calleja’s work draws from her personal experience a vision of a world suspended between uncertainty, longing and the distance of memory. Balthazar draws inspiration from geological elements to create drawings and stories. He is particularly interested in the archival aspect of minerals and the infinite stories they crystallise.
