ĦOL{MA}
A project with LA-based artist Adrian Abela, planned for May 2020, ĦOL{MA} has been postponed until further notice.
The composition of sculptures, drawings and actions is a personal meditation on and a tribute to Motherhood. It is inspired by and presented like a dream/scape, fragments of the artist’s relationship to all the mothers in his life. Being born as a healthy human on Planet earth {Gaia}, on an island {Malta}, in a hospital {Pieta’}, through a woman {Jennifer}, brought up in {Fgura}, and becoming an artist; {a birther/labourer of Matter}.
The works reflect on the personal condition of the maker paralleled and fractaling out to the history of Malta, which was the context of his formation, and the past few years living in Los Angeles, a city that facilitated the sedimentation of his life till that point. Moving out and far from his mother-land required him to become a patient patient. He was forced by a shift in perspectives following existential-crisis/dark-nights induced by loss and isolation in a new and unforeseen environment. Being a spectator in both the new world and of his past mother-land, he started researching and contemplating the lands’ histories and his own, to masticate and swallow some kind of understanding of what leads to the present and imagine possible flourishing futures. Coerced by consensus societal protocols he was confined to read reality much like how one would read a poem, and embraced the role of a conscious author of the same script.
